Sour Grapes

Righteousness was often interpreted as aggressive envy. “Most readers impute to malevolence and envy,” according to Sallust, “whatever charges you level against crime.”28 It is the envious who accuse the impetuous, the simplicior (as Horace would present himself to his patron Maecenas), of being troublesome and lacking in common sense (Satirae 1. 3.60-66). The livor, the spiteful indignation, of Martial’s rival, arises from his envy: the “circumcised” poet who rails at and belittles Martial’s poems also plagiarizes them (11.94). It is malus livor that hypocritically accuses Martial of writing verses dyed with spite; the envious accuse him of being envious and of writing with a poisoned pen (10.33). Elsewhere Martial complains about the small-minded provincial, the envy that passes for judgment, and the “municipalium robigo dentium,” the rusty, rotten teeth of the provincial (12 praefatio).29 If envy was an unsatisfied hunger, righteous indignation was its teeth.30
